BESE approval for KIPP Academy Lynn Charter Expansion Paves Way for New KIPP Elementary School in Lynn

LYNN, MA – On February 23, 2015, after multiple weather related delays, the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education voted to approve KIPP Academy Lynn’s charter amendment request to expand by adding a KIPP K-4 elementary school in Lynn. The school is now scheduled to open in August 2015 with a founding class of 120 kindergarteners.

KIPP Academy Lynn opened in 2005 with 77 5th graders and has expanded to serve over 850 students in grades 5-12. Sixty-eight (68%) the founding class of KIPP Lynn are currently persisting in college and many will graduate in the fall of 2015. In the most recent MCAS results, KIPP Lynn’s proficiency rates surpassed those of Lynn Public Schools in all subjects across all grades

The support from families who currently have students attending KIPP, or having graduated from KIPP Lynn, to expand to add an elementary school has been overwhelming. By engaging in a letter writing campaign, Lynn families were instrumental in getting the charter amendment approved. Natasha Megie-Maddrey, parent to two current KIPP students, one who attended KIPP from 5th through 8th grade, and a 2nd grader she hopes will attend KIPP in the future, wrote, “The earlier kids start at KIPP, the better off they will be. My youngest son is now in 2nd grade. I can’t wait until he attends KIPP, but why should he have to wait? I feel like the kids in Lynn deserve a chance to attend a great school starting in kindergarten.” When fully enrolled in 2019, KIPP will serve over 1,200 students in Lynn from grades K-12.

Today, over two-thirds of 5th grade students enter KIPP reading below grade level. Enrolling students in KIPP as early as kindergarten will reduce the amount of remediation necessary to ensure students are on the growth trajectory necessary to attend a competitive 4 year college. The KIPP Academy Lynn Elementary school will create a culture where academic and character development are of equal importance, and a post-secondary education is an expectation.

As a DESE proven provider, KIPP opened their first elementary school in Boston in August 2014, which currently serves 72 kindergarteners. The most recent reading assessment of KIPP Academy Boston Elementary students shows a 74% increase in students reading at grade level when compared with assessments completed at the beginning of the school year. KIPP Academy Lynn projects 100% of the current class of graduating seniors, the first class to benefit from a 5-12 KIPP education, will be headed to a four year college or post-secondary education program after graduation. Additionally, based on KIPP’s internal measures of college completion (GPA and ACT scores), a K-12 KIPP education will increase college graduation rates by 20%.

“We are so excited to serve kindergarteners in Lynn for the first time and look forward to watching them grow as they progress to and through college and onto living a life of choice,” says Eveleen Hsu, Founding Principal of KALE.
